On Thursday, Dec. 17, the Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host a birthday party to commemorate the establishment of Shiloh National Military Park.
The event will be held at the Visitors Center on Shiloh National Military Park and will begin at 1 p.m.
“This is the second consecutive year we have recognized the establishment and preservation of the park with a birthday celebration. Shiloh is a major tourism attraction for Hardin County and we welcome everyone to join us for cake and a time of fellowship to honor their efforts,” said Rachel Baker, Tourism Director for the Hardin County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Congress established Shiloh National Military Park on December 27, 1894, to commemorate the April 6-7, 1862, battle that raged around Shiloh Church and Pittsburg Landing. Producing more than 23,000 casualties, the battle was the largest engagement in the Mississippi Valley campaign during the Civil War. Originally under the War Department, Shiloh National Military Park was transferred to the National Park Service in the Department of the Interior in 1933. Currently, the park has over 4,200 acres.
