Confederates to 'occupy' the Borough again | Civil War, Stones River

The Confederate Army of Tennessee occupied Murfreesboro for more than two months prior to the Battle of Stones River. Members of the Western Independent Grays will give visitors to Stones River National Battlefield a glimpse of what life was like for those soldiers as the seasons passed and battle approached.

Join Stones River Battlefield in a recreation of winter quarters in Murfreesboro. Learn about the myriad of daily activities that made up a soldier’s life including the largest duty which was to practice their battle skills.



Program Schedule:


Saturday Oct. 11


8 a.m. - Platoon Drill - Watch the men break up into small groups to practice their basic marching and weapons handling.

10 a.m. - Company Inspection - Officers will check weapons and equipment to make sure they are maintained properly.

10:30 a.m. - Cavalry Demonstration - Watch the cavalry as they practice their maneuvers on horseback and on foot. This program will include a firing demonstration.

11 a.m. - Dinner Call - The men will return to camp to eat and relax.

Noon - Quartermaster Issue - The men will receive equipment to replace worn items.

1 p.m. - Company Drill - Watch as the platoons reform into a company and continue to work on their marching skills.

2 p.m. - Company Drill - The men will continue to drill as a large unit and include firing practice.

3 p.m. - Cavalry Demonstration - Watch the cavalry as they practice their maneuvers on horseback and on foot. This program will include a firing demonstration.

4 p.m. - Company Drill - The men will continue to work on their marching skills before being dismissed for the day.



Sunday Oct. 12

10 a.m. - Parade and Inspection - The men will show of their skills for their officers and visiting civilians.

11:30 a.m. - Skirmish Drill - The cavalry and infantry will work together to practice forming a screen in front of the main line of battle. This program will include a firing demonstration.

These programs are a part of a series of interpretive programs offered at the battlefield during the year.  Stones River National Battlefield is located on the Old Nashville Highway northwest of Murfreesboro.
